PVC Pipe

What is an PVC pipe ?

Polyvinyl chloride, known as PVC, is a thermoplastic piping material made of a combination of plastic and vinyl commonly used in residential and commercial plumbing spaces. PVC plumbing pipes are white, grey or cream in color and typically found in drain-waste-vent (DWV) systems or high-pressure water areas.

MidCity Plumbers have certified professionals install, replace and repair a variety of plumbing systems. Running into a clogged drain sink or shower drain first thing in the morning can throw your routine off track. Even worse when home remedies do not work, which can potentially worsen the problem. Our professional plumbers are trained to diagnose and repair the issue quickly and efficiently.

What is an PVC pipe used for ?

PVC pipes and fittings are a popular and common choice for residential and commercial spaces widely accepted by codes. They are used in drain-waste-vent (DWV) systems, hot- and cold- water supply systems and highly pressurized water systems, such as the main water supply in a home. In addition to draining applications, PVC pipes are used to transport potable water. Potable water is water that runs from taps in showers, sinks, and bathtubs located in kitchens and bathrooms.

The plastic material is inexpensive, lightweight and easy to install and maintain. The exceptionally durable, chemically resistant and non-toxic characteristics make the material the ideal choice for kitchens, bathrooms, showers and water supply systems. In addition, the long-life of PVC pipes limits the impact on natural resources, which allow the material to meet sustainability requirements.

At MidCity Plumbers, our team’s combined years of experience and knowledge help collect information to analyze and diagnose issues quickly. We cover all your plumbing needs, from slow drains, drain clogs, p-traps, leaks, and more.

ABS Pipe vs. PVC Pipe

PVC pipes have been used longer than ABS pipes and are still widely used today. The main difference between the two is that ABS pipes are used to drain, and PVC pipes are used to drain and transport potable water. The colors of each pipe help distinguish the difference, with ABS pipes being black and PVC pipes being white, grey or beige. Both plumbing pipes are non-toxic and durable, however, ABS pipes are known to be more durable under cold temperatures. PVC pipes are flexible, resistant to elements and can withstand high-pressure systems. They are the ideal choice to use indoors in sink drains, shower drains or toilet drain lines as it is soundproof and minimizes the sound of water flowing through plumbing pipes.

The differences between ABS pipes and PVC pipes come down to plumbing applications and installation steps, however, the properties and advantages of each material are similar. Both types of pipes are easy to install and maintain. The only difference is ABS pipes are a one step process and PVC pipes are a two-step process for connecting pipes. The process can add an additional cost of labor since the materials cost about the same price.

Our team has the expertise to assess and recommend which material will work best for your residential or commercial space. We are here to make the process easier and save you time and money.

CPVC Pipe vs. PVC

The cost of building and the replacement of materials has slowly increased. Added services, materials and labor costs stretch budgets. How can you save time and money? Plastic piping is inexpensive, durable and easy to install. Two common types of plastic piping are CPVC pipes and PVC pipes, which share similar properties.

The main difference is CPVC pipes are chlorinated and able to withstand higher temperatures of up to 93°C, while PVC will begin to soften after 60°C. They have similar properties of being long lasting, corrosion resistant, chemical resistant and safe for use with potable water. Although the plastic pipes are similar in price, the decision to use one over the other will depend on regulations and building codes. Some building codes need to have CPVC pipes in place of PVC for transporting hot water
