A-Must Do For Your House: Replace S-Trap

The difference between S-trap and P-trap

Each plumbing fixture should have its own individual trap underneath, except fixtures such as toilets, kitchens that have traps inside. An S-trap differs in appearance from a P-trap, but they have the same function. A standard pipe connects the drainage to the sewer, however, there is nothing stopping the sewer gases from flowing back up the pipe, leading to bad smelling gases. In fact, this was one of the biggest problems when indoor plumbing started off.

Why replace the S- trap?

The trap not only constantly keeps water inside, in order to block harmful vapors that rise through the drain, it also often receives chemicals intended to clear clogs, which often settle in the curved trap before d ” reach the right side of the drain pipe. Therefore, the trap is often the first part of the drain plumbing to fail and must be replaced. If the S-trap just leaks at the joints, you can eventually tighten it, but if it continues, or leaks from somewhere along the trap, replace it.

Material law replacement

It is likely, especially if the drain has the original S-trap in place or if it has not been modified for a long time, that the S-trap is made of metal. The problem with metal pipes is that, over time, they corrode and develop leaks. Avoid when you replace the S-trap by installing a PVC S-trap. The plastic trap is not only easy to install and remove, compared to a metal, but it does not corrode.

The main difference between S-Trap and P-Trap

An easily noticed difference between an S-trap and a P-trap can be seen by looking under two sinks, where one has an S-trap and the other P-trap. The P-trap connects to a horizontal pipe arm that goes up through the wall. In contrast, the S-trap connects to a vertical pipe that runs through the floor. Although S-traps are not allowed in the new build, you can replace the one you already have with a new S-trap instead of changing the plumbing on the device to accommodate a P-trap. Both S-traps and P-traps lead to the sewer line.

Replacing the S-Trap

When you replace the S-trap, take it with you to the hardware or home improvement store. This way you can get a replacement that is the exact size because different devices require different trap sizes. If there is a tight fit for the S-trap between the two vertical sections of the pipe it connects, bends the S-trap over itself to make it fit easier. PVC pipes and slip nuts normally allow you to tighten them by hand but end up tightening them with a pipe wrench, if necessary, to get the nuts slip tight.
