How to Install a Pop-Up Drain Stopper in a Bathroom Sink

How to install pop-up drain stopper for bathroom sink

With our everyday routine, we are constantly looking for ways to be more practical in the future. When it comes to bathroom sinks, it pays well to understand the ins and outs of how the drainage system works especially in terms of investing in drain stoppers. While there may be several types of drain stoppers, we are particularly looking at the pop-up drain stopper which operates as an on-off drainage plug mechanism.

Before diving into this article, it is noteworthy that installing a new drain stopper comes with the installation of a new sink. Some faucets have a built-in drain stopper with them, so you only need to replace the sink drain. Nonetheless, we have rounded up the ways on how to install a pop-up drain stopper in a bathroom sink.

Remove the old drain assembly

In removing the old drain assembly, gently loosen the P-trap from the drain and sink tailpiece using pliers. This may result in water excess, so make sure to have a bucket while you do the process. Extract the old pop-up linkage if necessary.

Prepare the new pop-up drain stopper

To prepare the new stopper, you need to disassemble the pieces of the new pop-up assembly and install the plastic and rubber washer after removing the mounting nut from the sink tailpiece. Push the washers all the way down the mounting nut for proper securing.

Apply pipe joint compound

To ensure proper sealing, apply a pipe joint compound to the top side of the rubber washer. This will seal the rubber against the bottom of the sink.

Apply plumber’s putty

A plumber’s putty is essential for the upper part of the drain assembly to work well with the sink drain opening. Without a putty, leaking can occur.

Connect the drain parts

The next step requires you to push the pop-up drain tailpiece through the opening. While in the process, fit the drain ring into the opening and thread the same onto the tailpiece as far as you can. Make sure to tighten the pieces together as necessary.

Tighten the drain assembly

Hold the tailpiece with your hand and tighten the mounting nut upwards with your free hand. This is an important step of the process as this helps you prevent leaking in the future. Keep in mind that over-tightening the mounting nut may pose more problems, just make it secure enough so the drain assembly keeps in place with the drain opening.

Put the drain stopper into place

Insert the new pop-up stopper into the drain opening in the sink. Ensure that the hole in the linkage is facing toward the back part of the sink. The pivot rod will then be inserted into the opening of the tailpiece. Don’t forget to screw the pivot rod nut onto the fitting of the tailpiece.

Install the pop-up lever

Next, feed the pop-up lever down the hole just behind the spout of the faucet. Before attaching the horizontal pivot rod to the lever, see to it that your stopper is fully in an open position. Then you have to attach the connecting strap to the end of the said pop-up lever. End by tightening the screw on the connecting strap.

Connect the pop-up lever and pivot rod

Lastly, connect the horizontal pivot rod with the strap by threading the spring clip onto the rod. Make sure that the stopper opens and closes properly inside the opening of the drain. Adjust as necessary.

Now that you know the basics of installing a pop-up drain stopper, there is a need for proper consultation from drainage experts regarding the ins and outs of this process. While doing the installation on your own may seem an affordable solution, a professional plumber has the proper equipment and necessary expertise to install a pop-up drain stopper. DIY methods may cause more damage costs in the long run as compared to securing expert water and drainage services near you.
